The Matese Massif (MM), located at the boundary between the central and the southern Apennines (Italy), is a crustal sector composed of thick Meso-Cenozoic carbonate rocks. The MM is generally pictured into a broader geodynamic framework that claims for Middle-Late Quaternary to active NE-SW-trending crustal extension, accommodated along major NW-SE-striking high-angle normal faults (e.g., Galli et al., 2017; Boncio et al., 2022).
The main purpose of the data collection work is to investigate the encoding of environmental signals, such as those imparted by tectonics (e.g., earthquake cycles) and climate forcings, into a continental clastic stratigraphic records using the Magnetic Susceptibility (MS) as proxy of environmental changes. I sampled the matrix components of the deposits, specifically the fraction finer than granules, collecting them along a ~34m-long section. This latter is located at the top of the central Matese Massif, at the base of a partially degraded normal fault scarp, close to the outlet of a steep and short catchment. The measurements have been conducted at the Laboratory of Paleomagnetism of the Roma Tre University (Rome, Italy) by using the AGICO Kappabridge pick-up unit KLY-3 instrument, managed during measures‘ acquisition by software developed by AGICO and design for DOS operating systems. The created MS dataset consists of a total of 340 measurements, five for each of the 68 specimens.
This publication results from work conducted under the transnational access/national open access action at “Measurments of remanent magnetization - Laboratory of Paleomagnetism, Roma Tre University” supported by WP3 ILGE - MEET project, PNRR - EU Next Generation Europe program, MUR grant number D53C22001400005.
Location, sampling method and instruments:
Along a ~34m-long stratigraphic section of continental sands and gravels deposits, a total of 68 samples of matrix finer than granules have been collected by using small plastic boxes. The target section is located at the top of the central Matese Massif, specifically at the base of a partially degraded NW-SE-trending normal fault scarp, close to the outlet of a steep and short catchment.
Method of analysis, hardware and software used:
The measurements have been conducted at the Laboratory of Paleomagnetism of the Roma Tre University (Rome, Italy) by using the AGICO Kappabridge pick-up unit KLY-3 instrument. The software used for measures‘ acquisition is developed by AGICO and design for DOS operating systems (SUSAR, SUSAM software).
Summary of datasets, data format and form:
The built dataset of bulk Magnetic Susceptibility consists of a total of 340 measurements, i.e. five measurements for each of the 68 specimens.
